Did you know that by law you are required to report a colleague (MD or PA) who has a substance abuse problem or mental/emotional problem which can interfere in the safe practice of medicine? Maine law (LD 571-8) requires health care professionals to report such concerns to the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine (BOLIM).
However, the same law allows you to report to the Maine Medical Association (MMA) Physician/PA Health Program (PHP), which may prevent your colleaguešs loss of license. The MMA makes the PHP available for private and confidential referral to treatment. This program provides intervention, evaluation, and treatment management. You can contact them online at www.mainemed.com see the Physician Health Program.
If you are uncertain about referral, you can receive assistance and support from DEAPA by calling (207) 620-7577 or by clicking on the following email: ethics@deapa.com. A physician assistant will respond and provide confidential assistance.
You may also report or ask questions confidentially using the email form below. Please provide contact information if possible, however it is not required.
It's the law to report, but you can do even more and may prevent a loss of license . . . or worse!
